The Bakossi Cultural and Development Association Gothenburg (BACDA Gothenburg) has been officially launched in Sweden, marking an important milestone for the Bakossi community and the wider Kupe Muanenguba diaspora across Scandinavia.

Initiated in August 2025, BACDA Gothenburg has developed into a vibrant community organisation with more than 20 registered adult members and over 30 children under the age of 18 from across Västra Götaland.

Within its first year of active operation, the association has established a strong foundation and demonstrated significant potential for growth. With increasing interest from Bakossi families and the wider Kupe Muanenguba community, BACDA Gothenburg has the potential to increase its membership to more than 120 people within the next two years.

The association was established to preserve and promote Bakossi cultural heritage, strengthen unity among its members, support community development and pass Bakossi traditions and values on to future generations.

A Colourful Celebration of Bakossi Culture

The official launch ceremony, held in Gothenburg on 29 August 2026, brought together sons and daughters of Kupe Muanenguba residing in Gothenburg and other parts of Scandinavia.

Families, community leaders, children, friends and invited guests gathered for a memorable celebration of identity, unity and cultural pride.

Among the distinguished guests were Nhon Dr Ekomenzoge and his wife from the United Kingdom. Their presence added to the international character of the occasion and reflected the strong connection between the Bakossi community in Gothenburg and the wider Kupe Muanenguba diaspora.

The event featured a rich programme of traditional exhibitions, cultural rites, colourful dances and performances by children. Guests also enjoyed a display of Bakossi gastronomy, featuring a variety of traditional dishes that showcased the community’s rich culinary heritage.

Traditional attire, music and dance transformed the occasion into a powerful expression of Bakossi identity and culture. The participation of more than 30 children was particularly significant, demonstrating the association’s commitment to passing the Bakossi language, customs, traditions and values on to the next generation.

Commitment to Community Development

The successful launch reaffirmed BACDA Gothenburg’s determination to build a united, active and supportive Bakossi community in Sweden while contributing positively to Gothenburg’s multicultural society.

The association will serve as a platform for cultural education, social engagement, community development, youth empowerment and cooperation among Bakossi people across Scandinavia and beyond.
